The 5 best Christmas Markets in Germany 2022

Planning a short Christmas trip? German has by far the most beautiful Christmas markets in whole Europe. That is not strange with a total of 2800 Christmas markets and the number is still counting. So take a seat as I’ll go through The 5 best Christmas markets in Germany. Christmas Markets are one of the reasons Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, so make sure to visit at least one!

1. Cologne

Cologne is a very nice city to visit but the Christmas markets give the city a little extra. Cologne has, like many larger cities in Germany, up to 8 different Christmas markets. The cool thing about this is that they all have a different theme. Nevertheless, Cologne’s most known Christmas market is located at the foot of the city’s most iconic landmark and UNESCO World Heritage site, the Gothic Cathedral. This beautiful Cathedral on background of the most popular Christmas market in Cologne is the reason it’s definitely on number one. The Christmas markets are taking place from 25th of November until 24th of December 2022. The opening hours are: 11.00 until 21.00.

The 5 best Christmas Markets in Germany in 2019

2. Nuremberg

The Christmas Market in Nuremberg is one of the most charming and oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Every year the market is opened by the Christ child herself in the main market square. The most popular Christmas market in Nuremberg is the Children’s Christmas Market. Next to the cozy Christmas markets, there are also food specialties: the Nuremberg Bratwurst and the Nuremberger Lebkuchen. These two are both absolutely delicious! The Christmas Markets will open from 29th of November 2021 until 24th of December 2022. The opening hours are: 10.00 until 21.00.

The 5 best Christmas Markets in Germany in 2019

3. Berlin

By the end of November you’ll find more than 26 Christmas Markets in Berlin. So this is the perfect Christmas destination if you are planning to stay for a couple of days. Of all the Christmas markets, The Weihnachtszauber Christmas Market is probably the most beautiful in Berlin, so if you go to Berlin don’t forget to go by. The entrance of 1 euro is totally worth it.  In addition to all the cozy Christmas stalls, there are also jugglers, fire-breathers and Christmas choirs. The Christmas Markets will be open from 23rd of November until the 31st of December 2022. The opening hours are: 11.00 until 22.00.

4. Dresden

In the eastern part of the country, Dresden has the largest number of Christmas markets. Dresden is one of the cities that are able to lay claim to the title of having the oldest Christmas market in Germany. The Striezelmarkt is one of the most popular and oldest Christmas markets of Dresden. It first started in the 15th century. The Striezelmarkt is open every day (10.00 – 21.00)  from 27th of November until 24th of December 2022.

5. Dusseldorf

Last but not least: Dusseldorf! Dusseldorf is the most visited Christmas Market In Germany and for a good reason. The German city is always transformed into a true winter paradise in the last months of the year. Every Christmas market has a different style. The style of the architecture is in accordance to the style of the Christmas stalls. The Christmas Markets will be open from 21st of November until 30th of December 2022 (25th of December closed). The opening hours are: 11.00 until 20.00.
