Day 1: Discovering the Charm of Heusden | Heusden travel guide

First off, traveling and showing you my home country is something I enjoy so much! Especially if I can take @nonstopnikki with me and the whole trip is a surprise. I’d never heard of Heusden before, but as soon as we arrived, we felt so welcome. Heusden is a beautifully preserved fortified town with cobbled streets, historic buildings, and picturesque canals.

We started our surprise trip exploring the center and visiting local stores, which ended with the best ice cream in town from t Heusdens IJshuys. Gijs, the owner, showed us around and made us feel right at home. The ice cream is made from local ingredients and the flavors were absolutely delightful.

Afternoon: Historical Tour

After that, we went for a tour around the surroundings of Heusden to learn about its rich history. Heusden’s history dates back to the 13th century, and it played a significant role as a strategic fortification. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the town’s past, including its role in various wars and its restoration efforts.

Evening: Delightful Dinner at Restaurant en Cooking Studio van Dijk

Our day ended with a delightful dinner at Restaurant en Cooking Studio van Dijk. We enjoyed delicious food with beautiful views, and my absolute favorite was the seafood entree. The restaurant is known for its use of fresh, local ingredients, and the menu changes seasonally to reflect the best produce available.

Sunset: Boat Trip on the Maas River

After this wonderful dinner, we had another surprise waiting for us. After a good cup of coffee, we found ourselves walking towards the water, wondering if a boat trip was our next adventure. As it turns out, we were right! We had a beautiful sunset waiting for us at Boei35 with a good bottle of wine. They showed us Heusden from the water, which was absolutely stunning, and I captured some amazing shots which you can see below. After our boat trip, we were welcomed back at Boei35 for a late-night snack, which was delicious.

Night: Stay at In den Verdwaalde Koogel

Then, it was time to head back to our hotel In den Verdwaalde Koogel. Our room was great, located right at one of the busiest squares. The hotel is a historic building itself, adding to the charm of our stay. The next morning, it was time for us to leave for another day full of surprises.

Day 2: Cycling Through the Dunes | Heusden travel guide

The second day was a more sporty one, and as real Dutchies, we went for a cycling trip exploring the dunes called the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, which are absolutely stunning. This national park, often referred to as the Brabant Sahara, features vast sand dunes, heathlands, and woodlands.

Together with our guide, we went cycling and she showed us all the pretty spots. We learned about the unique flora and fauna of the area and enjoyed the peaceful natural surroundings. To end this trip, we had a lovely lunch in the sun at a local cafe, and it was already time to pack my bags again for my next trip later that night.

Heusden invites you to experience the tranquility and beauty of the Netherlands most picturesque settings. With this travel guide, you’re set to discover the best of Heusden, with its rich history and beautiful scenery, is a must-visit destination in Brabant.
